Cattle futures get hit again, but will news of negative avian flu samples help the market find its footing?

Live Cattle
Technicals (June-M)
Cattle futures broke lower mid-morning taking prices down to our support pocket from 172.90-173.425, which was defended with a low of 172.70 on the day but a close at 173.85. Lingering concerns and rumors of an incoming headline may have been a spark that led the decline to feed on itself. However, that headline that came out after the close looks to be much more friendly than some may have feared. The USDA released a statement confirming that the beef they tested all came back negative and stated that they “reaffirm that the meat supply is safe,”. That should be good for a pop on the open. The first hurdle the Bulls want to overcome is 175.80-176.20. This doesn’t mean that the negative headlines are over, but it is a nice sign for the time being.
Resistance: 178.45-178.80****, 179.825-180.75***
Pivot: 175.80-176.20
Support: 172.90-173.425*** 169.00-170.00***

Feeder Cattle
Technicals (August – Q)
Feeder cattle took a schlacking yesterday, breaking below our 4-star support pocket from 254.025-255.00. In yesterday’s report we noted that “A break and close below this pocket and things could get even more spicy…”. That accelerated selling pressure took prices within 20 cents of our next support pocket from 248.30-250.075. As mentioned previously, these are wider pockets than we would like to use, but that’s the environment we are in. Which means position sizing is extra important. With the friendly news on negative tests in beef, we’d imagine we see a nice recovery in today’s trade. Previous support now becomes resistance that comes in from 254.025-255.00.0
Resistance: 258.00-258.50***, 263.325-264.875****
Pivot: 254.025-255.00
Support: 248.30-250.075****
